Lung Cancer Treatment The Natural Way
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer and is caused due to excessive exposure to asbestos. Malignant or cancerous cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers the lungs, heart, and stomach. The site that is commonly affected is the pleura, which is the outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity. Although, occurrence of pleural mesothelioma is rare, treatment of the disease is extremely difficult. Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma often do not appear for 20-40 years after an exposure to asbestos. Men in the age group of 50-70 are the most affected by pleural mesothelioma. The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are similar to those of a common cold or other minor respiratory infection. This makes diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma difficult in the early stages.
On detecting a patient with pleural mesothelioma, physicians usually order X-ray or CT scans. If the chest images show possible tumors, a verification of pleural mesothelioma can be obtained through a procedure known as thoracoscopy. In this procedure, a small instrument is inserted into the chest cavity to look for tumors. If the pleural mesothelioma causes the fluid to build up in the pleurum, an additional procedure known as a throacentesis is conducted simultaneously. A throacentesis allows the doctor to drain fluid from the pleurum of a pleural mesothelioma patient, thereby helping in diagnosis and decreasing the problem of restricted breathing.

After a diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma is successfully made, the next step is to stage the cancer. Staging is a procedure that helps to determine the severity of the cancer and the course of treatment required. Pleural mesothelioma patients, due to their advanced stage and late diagnosis, require palliative surgery. This surgery is designed to make the patient as comfortable as possible. The survival rate for victims of pleural mesothelioma is very low, but treatments are constantly improving. However, patients diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma should remain optimistic, as there are a number of new technologies for treatment being implemented for a speedy cure.
